Research

This work started with the objective of creating a digital solution for time management.

We began by observing and understanding the way people manage their time during the day. We found that people use their memory, a notebook or a mobile device to take a record of the tasks they have to do during the day. they do this mainly not to forget the tasks, to mark is done, to plan their free time or not to stay up late.

The next part of the research was a record in which people wrote their plans for the next day and wrote in another column the activities and hours to which they actually performed each one. With these records we found:

  • People use diminutives in the description of the activities they enjoy doing.

  • Lunchtime and night time is a time that people usually devote to their personal time.

  • Some people start the day hitting 'snooze'.

  • Some people have delays of up to an hour and a half getting to work because they got up late.

  • Although some people get up later, it takes them the same time to get ready, so they take another mode of transportation to arrive on time at work.

After analyzing the activities related to time management, it was concluded that it gets harder to manage the time before sleeping and getting ready in the morning. As a result, we decided to intervene these moments of the day.

Emotional Journey and Empathy Map

We built an Emotional Journey to understand the emotions generated at each moment, from the end of the day's work until the person wakes up the next day.

After defining the approach of the project, we built an empathy map to visualize the attitudes and behaviors of the users, in order to have a deep understanding of the end users.

We found out that when people set the alarm and know how much time remains before the alarm sounds, people experience negative emotions. As a result, the project would aim to reduce these negative emotions making people have a great sleep and increasing their performance of the next day.

Value proposition definition

To build the value proposition, we did co-creation sessions with the users to understand what functions they would value from the application.

During the sessions we identified the following opportunities:

  • Show the user the activities that will stop doing when snoozing the alarm.

  • Autoconfiguration of the alarm according to the lifestyle of the person, the activities of the following day and festivities.

  • Setting the snooze time according to the person's preference.

  • Reward the person when leaving the house by opening the application that he uses the most (music player, waze, etc.).

  • Schedule an alarm for the person to knows what time to leave home.

  • Customize the sound of the alarm (including streaming music players).

  • Generate emotional links with the application.

Mou is designed for people who start working at the same time every day. It's easy to handle because it must be configured only once. People can set their name, the time they want for a snooze (not just 10 minutes) and the sound with they want to wake up with.

Mou also makes suggestions to better manage the time. He goes to sleep at the same time the person should go, to remind him that is time to rest. Also, he gives the user the possibility of sleeping a little bit more in the morning and he notifies the person 10 minutes earlier to leave home in order to be on time at work. According to the weather, he suggests what to wear and goes to work just like the person.

Mou has extra features. If the person has to wake up at a different time than usual, he can also set an 'Extra Alarm'. Besides, Mou collects location and time data to show which days the user was on time or late for work.

Biggest Learnings

  • It was important to quickly generate a functional prototype that was the closest as possible at the final version to evaluate the user's interactions with certain functionalities.

  • The processes of observation and generative sessions built the application, guaranteeing that it will generate value in the end user.

  • It is important to carry out fieldwork with a functional prototype very close to the final version to validate the final functions and to know if it is visually attractive for the user.
